The True Meaning of Marriage - Joseph Campbell Quote

"Marriage is not a love affair. A love affair is a totally different thing. A marriage is a commitment to that which you are. That person is literally your other half. And you and the other are one. A love affair isn’t that. That is a relationship of pleasure, and when it gets to be unpleasurable , it’s off. But a marriage is a life commitment, and a life commitment means the prime concern of your life. If marriage is not the prime concern, you are not married.”

~Joseph Campbell

My personal opinion is that marriage can also be a love affair when a couple considers their marriage as the prime concern of their lives, and a life commitment.

But marriage is certainly something well beyond a love affair.

You state that marriage can be considered a love affair when it becomes the prime concern of your life.

However, Joseph Campbell states that marriage is differentiated from a love affair when it becomes the prime concern in your life.

Then you state that marriage is certainly beyond a love affair. I'm confused about the ambiguity of your statement.

Hi Anonymous...

Opps I missed your comment until just now ... in December. Sorry about that.

I have many books written by JC as well as many biographies so am not quite sure where I found the quote last April. Sorry about that!

I'm basically a huge fan of his! :-)

Hi Marklar,

Sorry about the confusion. :-)

Basically I think marriage is more than a love affair meaning more than just love and sex between two people.

In addition, I think marriage can be a fabulous relationship and experience that includes both the commitment and prime experience spoken of by JC as well as a fabulous love affair that includes the passionate love and sex typically associated with a love affair.

Does that make more sense?

Thanks for your question,

Jennifer
