Eye Contact and Intimacy

the art of intimacy, looking into eyes, eye contact and intimacy, bonding together
Looking into another's eyes is extremely intimate.

There has been much research done on the phenomenon of looking into another's eyes and it seems that in virtually all cultures throughout the world, looking into the eyes of another is very meaningful and suggestive of intimacy.

It is worthy of note that in some cultures it is not appropriate (or even lawful) to look into the eyes of a member of the opposite sex, hence we see the veiling and covering of women. While in the west we find this inappropriate, it is not difficult to understand the reasoning behind this dictate or rule. In cultures with arranged marriages, that want to keep young people from attraction and connection disallowing eye contact certainly supports the effort.

However, when we want to increase intimacy, making extended eye contact can be a powerful behavior for a couple. Try looking into the eyes of another, not for a second or two but for a few minutes. As you search into the soul of your loved one, think of the beauty that exists within her. Focus your thoughts on the love you feel for your spouse. Truly engage in the experience allowing the intimacy to blossom forth.

Some couples find this simple exercise uncomfortable at first. Some may feel vulnerable or uneasy but in time, as we share ourselves and allow another to see our soul through our eyes, we bring a powerful sense of intimacy and love into the relationship.

Hello Jennifer. You've said nice things to me about my very short novels and now I have to commend you for your beautiful writing on a topic we both appreciate. Prolonged eye contact is the most powerful force on earth. I'm staring into your avatar's one eye as I type this. Come see Baby Talk for my take on the topic.
